Project: MindsEye

Finding myself in-between steady employment and still wanting to find a way to use my skills I came across a non-profit, MindsEye Radio, to lend my experience to.

I’d been a designer for a while at this point. Actually, I’d sort of fallen into it and then out of it and while I was looking for my next step I wanted to find a way to keep creating. I’d heard, from somewhere, offering your services to a non-profit can be a way to give back and, at the same time, keep building your skills.

An internet search led me to VolunteerMatch.org, essentially a directory of non-profits looking for volunteers. I tried several near me, many of them had limited space, until I came across MindsEye, an information service for people with vision impairment. They produce specialized programming on a specific radio channel, reading newspapers and other things.

Over the next several years I was able to help do the graphic design work for regular fundraising events they held. I have to recommend if you’re looking for a way to give back and keep pushing your skills, then volunteer work may be of interest to you. Check out Volunteermatch.org.
