FEB14: lightHope Project

lightHope 2014

I came across a photography book once upon a time, by whom I cannot remember, but it was full of photos of the human figure with abstract patterns projected on them. I thought, ohhhh I wanna do that!…lol…the lightHope Series came out of that exploration.

I’d started giving projects names just because it seemed to give them focus and be a bit fun. lightHope came from the ‘light’ being projected and it’s also a character from the She-Ra animated show, so it just made it a bit more humorous for those that caught on to that.

The book had abstract patterns projected, but I wanted to use something a bit more meaningful to me and used my own artwork. I also wanted more than static images, but to see the figure moving through space with the textures animating.

Since I did not have access to that kind of equipment…lol…I turned to 3D! I’d been using (now)Daz Carrara for a while (ahhh..MetaCreations we miss ya…lol) and it has a simple(?) way to shift a figure from one pose to another. It also has a way to project an image by using it as a gel on a light. I can’t seem to find a way to do that in C4D, yet. Things keep getting more accessible.

There was also the intention to try and create ‘realistic’ images using the 3D models and keeping the lighting and cropping ambiguous. It worked better in some cases than others, especially with the stills.

**As a side note being able to export a sequence of movements as .obj files is not an easy to find feature, but would be a cool ‘nice to have’…lol…**

ANYWAY, so the above animation is the result. I chose some of my favorite illustrations from the time and presto!

Here are the stills.

Music was composed in Garageband on my iPad Pro and the whole project was edited together using Adobe Premiere Pro.
